EES, the new Entry & Exit System in Europe


The European Union Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new electronic system that will replace the physical stamping of passports when passing through passport control on arrival to and departure from participating European countries.

Full implementation of the EES is expected to begin on April 10, 2026. As a result, longer than usual wait times may be experienced at airports when passing through passport control.

The European Union Entry/Exit System

When travelling through passport control, eligible travelers will now be required to:

·          Present their passport,

·          Have a photograph taken,

·          Provide fingerprint scans.

This system will electronically register each entry and exit to and from the EU/Schengen area. You do not need to take any action before you arrive at the border, and there is no cost for EES registration.

The EES applies to guests travelling for a short stay from a “third country,” meaning travellers who are not citizens of the European Union or the Schengen area. A short stay refers to visits, holidays, or business travel of up to 90 days within a 180‑day period.

The EES will apply when entering or departing the following European countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Guests of all ages will be required to participate in the EES process.

EES Implications for Cruise Travel

At present cruise guests are not required to complete EES entry or exit checks at EU/Schengen ports of call during the cruise, provided they remain on the cruise itinerary and continue to the next port of call.

However, depending on local regulations, guests joining a ship in an EU/Schengen port or disembarking from a ship in EU/Schengen port may need to clear EES in the port terminal. Guests flying home same day as disembarking should leave ample time to clear through the EES system once they disembark the ship.

If your travel from/to the airport has been arranged prior to your cruise, there may be no action required. Some cruise lines will have a representative awaiting your arrival at the airport after you have collected your luggage. Ask me to confirm your cruise line offering.

For guests planning independent travel from/to the airport, we recommend reconfirming your arrangements with your transportation provider.
